TREKKING ROUTES SUMMARY
MARANGU ROUTE: 5 days, four nights
Also known as the Coca-Cola or the tourist route, this is the easiest and shortest route to take to ascend Mount Kilimanjaro. This route can get very busy during peak hiking months, however, is the only route with the comfort of sleeping huts providing solar lights, bunks and lanterns. Soft drink and beer are also available for purchase at some of the lower camp sites.
Day 1 : Marangu Gate (6,000ft.) to Mandara Hut (9000ft.). Hiking time of 4 hours.
Day 2: Mandara Hut (9,000ft) to Horombo Hut (12,000ft.) Hiking time of 6 hours.
Day 3: Horombo Hut (12,000ft) to Kibo Hut (15,500ft.) Hiking time of 7 hours.
Day 4: Kibo Hut (15,500ft.) to Summit (19,340ft.) to Horombo Hut (12,000ft.) Hiking time of 7 hours.
Day 5: Horombo Hut (12,000ft) to Marangu Gate (6,000ft) to Arusha. Hiking time of 6 hours.
UMBWE ROUTE : 6 days, 5 nights
The Umbwe route is one of the least used routes up Kilimanjaro and avoids some of the overcrowding that takes place during the high season. Although not a technical climb this route is very steep and is best suited for more experienced trekkers.
Day 1: Umbwe Gate (6,000ft) to Umbwe Camp (9,000ft). Hiking time of 5 hours
Day 2: Umbwe Camp (9,000ft) to Barranco Camp (12,900ft) Hiking time of 5 hours
Day 3: Barranco Camp (12,900ft) to Karanga Camp (13,100ft) Hiking time of 3 hours
Day 4: Karanga Camp (13,100ft) to Barafu Camp (15,200ft) Hiking time of 3 hours
Day 5: Baragu Camp (15,200ft) to Summit (19,340ft) to Mweka (10,100ft) Hiking time of 15 hours
Day 6: Mweka (10,100ft) to Mweka Gate (6,000ft)
MACHAME: 6 days, five nights
The Machame Route, also know as the Whiskey Route, is better suited for the more adventurous hiker but is one of the most scenic routes up Kilimanjaro.
Day 1: Machame Gate (6,000ft) to Machame Camp (9,700ft) Hiking time of 7 hours.
Day 2: Machame Camp (9,700ft) to Shira Camp (12,600ft) Hiking time of 5 hours
Day 3: Shira Camp (12,600ft) to Barranco Camp (12, 950ft) Hiking time of 7 hours
Day 4: Barranco Camp (12,950ft) to Barafu Camp (15,200ft) Hiking time of 5 hours
Day 5: Barafu Camp (15,300ft) to Summit (19,340ft) to Mweka Hut (10,000ft) Hiking time of 15 hours.
Day 6: Mweka Camp (10,000ft) to Mweka Gate (6,000ft) Hiking time of 3 hours.
LEMOSHO ROUTE: 8 days, seven nights
The Lemosho Route is one of the lesser-used routes on Kilimanjaro and provides beautiful views of both sides of the mountain. The route provides plenty of time for acclimatization.
Day 1: Londorossi Gate (5,900ft) to Mti Mkubwa Camp (9,500ft) Hiking time of 4 hours
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp (9,500ft) to Shira 1 Camp (12,200ft) Hiking time of 6 hours
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp (12,200ft) to Shira 2 Camp (12,600ft) Hiking time 4 hours
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp (12,600ft) to Barranco Camp (12,950ft) Hiking time of 7 hours
Day 5: Barranco Camp (12,950ft.) to Karanga Camp (13,100ft) Hiking time of 3 hours
Day 6: Karanga Camp (13,100ft) to Barafu Camp (15,200ft) Hiking time of 3 hours
Day 7: Barafu Camp (15,200ft) to Summit (19,340ft) to Mweka Hut (10,000ft) Hiking time of 15 hours
Day 8: Mweka Camp (10,000ft) to Mwaka Gate (6,000ft) Hiking time of 3 hours.
RONGAI ROUTE: 6 days, five nights
The Rongai Route ascends Mount Kilimanjaro from the northeastern side of the mountain, along the border between Tanzania and Kenya. This route retains a sense of unspoiled wilderness and offers a different perspective on Kilimanjaro by approaching it from the north.
Day 1: Rongai Gate (6,400ft) to Simba Camp (9,020ft)) Hiking time of 4 hours
Day 2; Simba Camp (9,020ft.) to Second Cave (11,320) Hiking time of 3-4hours
Day 3: Second Cave (11,320ft) to Third Cave (12,700ft) Hiking time of 4hours
